Instructions for use of Green Vitamin Sprouter

І. Preparation for the sprouting

Get the Sprouter out of the box, disassemble it into separate elements, and wash them before first use in warm water with a sponge and an eco-friendly dish-washing detergent.

Take the right amount of raw (not subjected to any heat treatment or mechanical impact) grains, seeds, legumes or nuts usually 3-4 tablespoons.

This is a standard daily portion for one person. If you need more sprouts, increase the amount of grain, but in any case do not fill more than 1/3 of the Sprouter’s transparent jar. The grains increase in volume by 1.5-2 times during soaking and sprouting, and they need enough air to breathe; moreover, the grain layer should not be too thick it complicates rinsing and germination. It is advisable to use as clean grain as possible (for example, organic certified) to get the most health benefits.

Sort out the grains to remove all the black, broken, split grain, chaff and other debris, and pour it into the Sprouter’s transparent jar.

ІІ. Rinsing

Rinse the grains several times using clean cool drinking water directly in the Sprouter’s transparent jar.

For a more thorough washing put the jar in the colored container and let the water reach the top of the jar. The external container will retain water, and the damaged grains or the debris will float on the surface. To drain water, take out the jar, and the openings in the bottom will let the water flow. You do not have to use sieve or any another additional appliance to rinse the grains. If you are not sure that the grain was stored properly before sale, let it soak for 10-15 min. in a disinfecting solution (such as permanganic acid solution, salt solution or anolyte water). After that, rinse the grain again in the transparent jar and then place it inside the colored container.

III. Soaking

Pour clean drinking water into the jar so that it covers the grains by at least an inch. It is desirable to use the best quality water the same that you use for drinking.

The soaked grain will be actively drinking water. The soaking time is important: grains not enough saturated with water will germinate poorly and unevenly, and an overabundance of moisture can lead to a lack of air to breathe, damage, or the beginning of the fermentation or the emergence of mold.

Thus the grain must stay soaked for an average of 6-8 hours. The soaking and sprouting times are shown on the page Time to sprout.

It is not recommended to leave the grain soaked for more than 6-10 hours, as there are natural yeast on the surface of the grain, which can cause acidification and the formation of mold. Do not place the Sprouter under direct sunlight, near a radiator or in a draft. The optimal temperature range is 21º-29ºC (70º-84ºF). If it is too cold, the grain will grow slowly; if it is too hot, the acidification and fermentation of grain may start.

IV. Rinsing and Sprouting

After 6-8 hours, remove the Sprouter’s transparent jar and rinse the grain several times with clean drinking water. Put it back inside the colored container and cover with the slotted lid.

This will allow for air circulation (air is an important factor for germination!), protect the grains from dust and insects, and will keep the top layer of grain from drying out. You do not need to use an additional cloth or gauze to protect it from drying out, the lid copes just fine. The colored container provides for the natural grain germination process that occurs in the dark (in the ground). Keep the airtight lid screwed on the bottom side of the container so that you do not have to store it in a separate place. During the process of sprouting this lid does not perform any function. It is used when you need to transport the Sprouter with the grain in it, to prevent leakage of liquid. In addition, you can use the lid as a rack to put the transparent jar on if you want the grains to sprout green (to a few leaves). See below.

You should rinse the grain with cool clean drinking water every 6-8 hours.

By rinsing the grains several times a day you wash off carbon dioxide and other metabolic waste that can cause acidification and damage to grain, and provide hydration and ventilation (for this, gently shake the grain when rinsing). Do not stir the grains with a spoon or hand, you can easily damage the delicate seedlings.

On average, most types of grain will give seedlings of the 1-3 mm size in 8-12 hours.

These are considered the most useful sprouts. After another rinsing with clean water they are ready to eat. Do not eat the grain that did not produce any sprouts in two days after you soaked and sprouted them!

V. Sprouting to green leaves

If you need to sprout grain to green leaves, take the transparent jar with the sprouted grains out and install it on the airtight lid. Cover the top with the lid with holes for protection from dust, insects and drying out. Sunlight and warmth would contribute to the emergence of green shoots. Wash them every 6-8 hours to avoid unpleasant odor or souring.

VI. Carrying

You can carry your sprouting grain directly in the Sprouter (to your workplace, to a hiking tour, on a business trip). To accomplish this, swap the lids: the top will be covered with the airtight lid, and the lid with holes will go to the bottom. Do not keep the grain closed for too long though. If possible, rinse it every 6-8 hours, or at least let it breathe.

VII. Eating

It is desirable to eat the sprouted grains as soon as they reach the desired length. Fresh sprouts are the most healthy. The sprouts may be stored for no more than 24 hours in the refrigerator. Rinse them after the first 10-12 hours so that they are not dried up and darkened. You may use the Sprouter to keep the sprouts in the fridge; the slotted lid should be used as a cover so that the sprouts are not suffocated and rotted.

If you kept the green leaves of germinated beans, seeds or legumes in the refrigerator, it is recommended to expose them to the sunlight or a fluorescent lamp before eating for at least 30 minutes to increase the chlorophyll content.

VIII. Preparing for the next sprouting

Before soaking the next portion of the grain, rinse the Sprouter with warm water and eco-friendly dish-washing detergent.

Sprout with pleasure!
